LGBTQ+, Gender, & Sex

I specialize in LGBTQ+ affirmative psychotherapy, offering non-judgmental, sensitive, and savvy care for clients of any gender identity and sexual orientation.

Without judgment or pathologizing, I also take a sex-positive psychodynamic approach to working with clients who find themselves engaging in sexual activities, including pornography, in ways that feel out of control or compulsive.

In addition, I offer open-minded therapy for clients in the kink and BDSM communities, and to those working in the sex industry. I offer a safe space to discuss whatever is on your mind, without focusing on these aspects of your life — unless you want to.

Experience

In addition to my private practice, I worked as a clinical social worker for several years in community LGBTQ+ clinics, including the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center and the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center in New York City.

An internationally recognized expert and pioneer in transgender issues in psychoanalysis, I have published my writing on the topic in several peer-reviewed journals, including The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and Studies in Gender and Sexuality. I am also co-author of the chapter “Clinical Social Work Practice with LGBTQ Clients” in the textbook Clinical Social Work Practice with Diverse Populations.

Dedicated to advancing the field, I educate other therapists in working with trans and non-binary clients, and helped to found and organize the bi-annual Transgender Health Symposium at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy’s Center for Gender and Sexuality.
